The Pincio in Rome

When vacationing in Italy, visiting Rome is a must for anyone who enjoys beauty and has an interest in Ancient Roman History. There are many beautiful places to see in Rome that are not only rich in history but are also free to visit. One of those places is the Pincio.

Just to the north of the Quirinal Hill and overlooking the Campus Martius, you will find the Pincio. Even though it is not part of the Seven Hills of Rome, this hill is not only beautiful but holds history of its own.

Legend has it that the Pincio was once the burial place of the extravagant Emperor Nero of Rome. The emperor in his time was full of controversy and was disliked by many Romans. Upon his suicide, his mistress placed the emperor’s remains in the family tomb of Domitii on the Pincio. Many people thought that the tyrannical emperor was still haunting them there and at the end of the 11th century, Pope Pasquale II had his remains removed and disposed of. He then commissioned a Chapel for the Piazza. Some say he did this to banish the ghost of Nero. The church later became what is now known as Santa Maria del Popolo.

Not only does the Pincio offer history, it is a wonderful site to visit. There are lush gardens and a park with a beautiful view overlooking the Piazza del Popolo. You will also have a spectacular view of St. Peters Basilica and the Victor Emmanuel II Monument from there.
